The Source of Biodegradability
Molded pulp is primarily manufactured from natural plant fibers. These include recycled paper, cardboard, and agricultural byproducts like bamboo pulp, bagasse (sugarcane fiber), and wheat straw. These raw materials are derived from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin—organic substances that are naturally present in the environment. Since these fibers are plant-based, they serve as a food source for naturally occurring microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, a process that leads to their complete breakdown.
The Degradation Timeframe
Under suitable conditions, molded pulp products can decompose relatively quickly. In a natural outdoor environment, the material typically degrades completely within 45 to 90 days. This process can be accelerated in a home composting setup, where the warmer and more active microbial environment can break it down in as little as 30 to 45 days.
A Clear Contrast with Plastic
This performance stands in stark contrast to traditional plastics. While molded pulp returns to nature as water, carbon dioxide, and organic biomass (compost) in a few months, plastic packaging can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, often fragmenting into harmful microplastics.
In summary, molded pulp's inherent biodegradability stems from its plant-based composition. When properly disposed of, it offers a viable alternative to plastic, with a decomposition timeline measured in days and weeks rather than centuries.
