What is molded pulp packaging?

Molded pulp packaging (also known as molded fiber packaging) is a packaging material made from recycled paper products (such as newsprint, paperboard and other paper-based materials), paperboard scraps, or natural fibers (bagasse, bamboo, wheat straw). Pulp packaging is made in a series of steps. First, the raw materials (paperboard/newspaper/natural fibers) are mixed with water to make a pulp slurry. A mesh forming tool is placed in the pulp slurry tank. A vacuum pulls the slurry through the mesh tool until the desired thickness is reached. The wet part is released from the mesh tool and dried. The dried part is uneven and deformed. To make the surface smooth, the part is pressed with a heated metal tool. Embossed logos or artwork can also be applied at this stage. Finally, the edges are trimmed and any holes or windows are die-cut.
